Paper, clothing, rope, animal feed, human food are some of the many benefits of industrial cannabis. And sorry, you’d have to consume pounds of the stuff to get even a dull “high.”

Thanks to what amounts to legal smuggling from Canada, the United States is now able to produce a growing array of products made from hemp. Hemp, a renewable resource, was once used to make rope, paper, and cloth. But timber industry pressures in the 1930s, couched in alarmist health concerns about the psychoactive ingredient THC, made growing and production of hemp illegal, even though THC percentages in industrial hemp fall well below levels of potential hazard. [See this link to “Reefer Madness“] To this day, growing industrial hemp in the United States remains illegal.

For this reason, buying or selling hemp products made from imported hemp in the US is almost equated with subversive behavior. It takes 4 acres of trees to equal the paper pulp of 1 acre of hemp. Hemp makes better quality paper than wood pulp and more durable clothing than industrial cotton, the industry of which is responsible for large-scale pollution from pesticide use. Hemp can easily be grown without pesticides or fertilizers, as is true with most “weeds”.

Now for the juicy stuff… hemp seeds make excellent human food. One-third essential fatty acids, one-third soluble and insoluble fiber, and one-third protein, hemp can sustain a human being indefinitely. With a ratio of essential fatty acids that falls into the “near perfect” range, consuming hemp oil, internally or topically, can help with healing eczema and psoriasis. It has no trans-fatty acids, which have been implicated in unhealthy cholesterol buildup and heart disease, and it has a complete amino acid profile more easily assimilated than soy. Those allergic to the lactic acid in whey protein, or the gluten and soy in other protein supplements will avoid all the common allergens by switching to hemp.
